1. Elevate
(1) Medullary thyroid cancer Medullary thyroid cancer originated from thyroid parafollicular cells, and serum calcitonin levels were significantly increased in patients. Calcitonin can be used to monitor the efficacy of medullary thyroid cancer. If calcitonin is within the reference range and the pentagastrin challenge test is negative after tumor resection, it can be presumed that the patient has been cured.
(2) The serum calcitonin level of small cell lung cancer was significantly correlated with the activity of small cell lung cancer, and the level of calcitonin in patients with small cell lung cancer was significantly increased.
(3) Serum calcitonin levels in patients with acute and chronic renal insufficiency and renal failure may increase to varying degrees.
(4) Newborns, children and pregnant women may increase serum calcitonin levels due to bone turnover.
(5) Others such as insulinoma, carcinoid, vasoactive intestinal polypeptide tumor, gastrointestinal cancer, breast cancer, etc., the level of serum calcitonin can also increase.
2. Lower
(1) Serum calcitonin levels are decreased in patients with hypothyroidism or total thyroidectomy.
(2) Serum calcitonin level decreases in severe hyperthyroidism.
(3) Serum calcitonin level in adult women was lower than that in men, and decreased with age, and the decrease was more obvious in postmenopausal women.
[Normal reference value range]
Serum calcitonin: <100ng/L
[Precautions]
1. During specimen collection, venous blood should be collected overnight on an empty stomach.
